Development in Chilliwack, unveiled plans today for the Quarry Run project, a $250 million
multi-use sports facility and winter club with the world’s largest usable green roof. It will be built
at the base of Mount Cheam in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley 100 kilometers east of
Vancouver, planned for a Fall 2009 start.
“Quarry Run will be one of the world’s most exceptional sports facilities—a building that
integrates high-performance sports with environmental sensitivity with unparalleled beauty,”
says Falls Resort president Rick Wellsby. The Quarry Run winter club will be the first in the
Fraser Valley, offering families and professional athletes world-class sports facilities in a
breathtaking setting.
Designed by Vancouver’s Matthew Soules, a Harvard graduate and one of North America’s
fastest-rising architectural talents, Quarry Run will be a 940,000-square-foot building with an
innovative design and mission, combining luxury living with state of the art sport venues under
a one-of-a-kind green roof. Built into the mountainside, the first phase will house four ice rinks
and an eight-sheet curling centre. Quarry Run will also include a world-class indoor
multipurpose sports field and running track, three indoor tennis courts, four badminton courts
and four squash courts. The 350,000-square-foot green roof will feature lushly planted slopes
and inclines supporting a 9 hole golf course, playing field, tennis courts and a training circuit,
all able to be illuminated for nighttime play.
Complementing the sport venues will be a 240-room four-star hotel, a luxury spa, banquet
facilities, 90 high-end residential units and a 135-room dormitory for youth sports camps, all
with stunning views of Mount Cheam on one side and the golf course on the other. The
residential units will feature innovative “turntable terraces” overlooking the ice rinks that, at the
push of a button, can smoothly transform into interior home theatres by rotating inwards.
“Our goal has been to integrate sports, luxury living and the landscape into one hyper-efficient
yet strikingly beautiful experience,” says architect Matthew Soules. “The green roof is shaped
to accommodate golf and physical training, as well as respond to the mountainside site. The
inclusion of so many different functions in this building has been a catalyst for innovation.”
Quarry Run is the first in a series of planned amenity buildings at The Falls Resort and
promises to capture world attention. “The Falls vision is a new class of resort on a grand
scale,” says Robert Wilson, chairman of The Falls Resort. "The Falls vision is to pioneer a
new definition of a 21st-century resort community by building world class sports facilities for
virtually every major sport in the world."
